Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the ability to contest certain decisions made by the official, following the system already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
