A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in total compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
