Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
